EPISODE #1: NEW GOALS NEED NEW HABITS

“Hello and happy new year. This episode is dropping January 2nd, 2023. But if you’re listening later, like in the future, this is still a great place to start. Because it’s the first of the year, you’re going to hear all kinds of podcasts about setting goals. People are going to tell you they need to be smart. They need to be yours. They need to be in writing. And they’re going to give you a list of other things your goals need to be.

All of those things are true. But it doesn’t mean anything unless you establish new habits to go with your new goals. Nothing is going to change until you do. Hey, that’s the best part. It’s completely up to you. Maybe that’s the most terrifying part. It is completely up to you.

Over a hundred million Americans say that they are struggling or in crisis with their finances. If that’s you first, I want to say I’m so sorry. I have been there, and I know how scary it feels. Trust me I had two month old baby. And we were talking about bankruptcy and foreclosure. That’s scary. So, wherever you are, I feel you. That’s why I’m here to help.

Second, if that’s you, if you’re one of those 100 million Americans struggling or in crisis, make today the day you say I’ve had it. And choose to control your financial life. The only person in this entire world that you can control is you. And if you’ve had it – you’re tired of living paycheck to paycheck. If you’re tired of feeling like you don’t understand your money, today is the day to change your financial life.

And third. If that’s you. Let’s implement a little strategy to make the change really happen.

I’m going to tell you about the first three things you need to do to take control of your financial life. I’m going to keep this really simple, really easy for our first podcast together guys. There are three things you need to do.

The first thing: you’ve got to set a goal. I know. I know I talked about it earlier. Everybody’s setting goals right now, but you’ve got to set a goal. Your goal needs to be attached to your why? You can’t just set a goal and leave it out there. You need to know why you want to go get that thing. It’s not enough to say I want to be debt-free. Why? It’s not enough to say I want to buy a house. Why? It’s not enough to say I want to leave a legacy. Why do you want to do that? Why is that important to you? If you can connect your goal to a tangible why you’re more likely to go get it.

We will get into my why and how I got started a little bit later along in our podcast series. But for now… You’ve got to set a goal. What’s your why?

While we’re setting that goal – while you’re deciding where you want to end up – you also need to figure out where you’re starting. I know it can be a really overwhelming to sit down and look at your numbers, figure out how much debt you have, figure out what your net worth is, figure out what you have in retirement and all of those other places. If you need some help with this I would absolutely love to sit down with you and go through your numbers.

The second thing you’re going to need to do, now that you know your why and you have a goal set and you know where you’re starting from…

You’re not going to like this one….

Now that you know, all these things, you’ve got to create a budget.

There are a lot of people who really don’t like the word budget. And I can understand that. In culture today budget has this feeling of restriction in negativity. But the truth of the matter is you’re in charge of your budget. When you sit down and create a budget, you give yourself permission to spend your money. And that is the coolest part.

If I know I have money to go and spend to get my nails done, I have no issue going and spending that money to get my nails done. If I know there’s money in the bank to take my children out for a really fun play date or an awesome trip to Disneyland because I’ve budgeted for it, I get to do it with absolutely no stress. And that is what I want for you. Everything that we’re going to talk about on this podcast is how to manage your money so that your life is more peaceful, and you have less stress and less anxiety around your money.

So that’s number two. You’ve got to build a budget, and you need to make it based on what you value. If you have never made a budget before, I do a values-based budget plan. And if you check the show notes, you’ll see my Better Budget Bootcamp which will teach you how to create a budget in just five days.

And it’s only $27. I’m not charging you an arm and a leg. I’m giving you this amazing piece of content for a very low price. But you could also just come back to this podcast and listen more and see what I give you for free.

The third thing you need to implement in your life to take control of your finances is you need to find an accountability partner.

This is not something we talk about a lot when we talk about goal setting but having somebody in your corner who’s going to cheer you on is an absolutely wonderful thing. Do not pick a naysayer. We all have those negative Nellies in our life that are going to come around and they all have horrible things to say, like “the little man can’t get ahead” or “people like us will never make money.” Those people are not the people you want to be your accountability partner. You need somebody with hope. And you need somebody who is going to encourage you. Come back to this podcast every Monday, and I will encourage you along the way.

Also don’t pick your shopping buddy. If it’s somebody that likes to spend a whole lot of money. They’re probably not the person that you want to hold you accountable to not spend a whole lot of money. Don’t pick your shopping, buddy. Don’t pick a naysayer, and, if you need to, you can always let it be me.

Remember, if you want something to be different  in your life. You have to do something different. You can’t keep doing the same things and expecting different results. I assume that you have probably set goals before.  So I have to ask you: the goal that you’re setting today, is it specific? Is it measurable? Is it yours? I really want this to be for you. I really want you to create a goal, have it associated with a why, and make sure it’s for you.

Cause you’re never going to do it if it’s for your mom, or if it’s for your friends or even if it’s for your spouse. It has to be for you. What do you want? Make sure it’s yours and then make sure it’s in writing. Sit down, write out your goal.

This time, dive into your why. Create a budget based on what you value and find someone to hold you accountable to get what you want. And remember, I don’t want you to give up what you want most for what you want right now.

2023 is the year you master your money. You won’t become a millionaire overnight, but if you come back every Monday, I’m going to help you go from overwhelmed to in control of your money. We are going to eliminate stress and anxiety and find financial peace. You will no longer be in financial bondage but will thrive in financial freedom.

That’s freedom to make whatever choice you want with your money. Freedom to make whatever choice you want with your career. Whatever freedom looks like for you, I want you to find that financial freedom.

All right guys, that’s it for this week. Come back next Monday because I’ve got some really awesome stuff for you guys.

And I hope to hear from you. Let me know what you think about this podcast. Feel free to send me a message. I would absolutely love to hear from you. All right, we’ll talk with you next time.”
